Learning More About You
The Donor Screening Process
We need to feel confident about the sperm we provide to those trying to grow their families. This is why we use a comprehensive screening and evaluation process to help ensure each of our sperm donors meet the high standards of California Cryobank.
The entire screening process — from the approval of your application to the time you become a fully qualified sperm donor — will take approximately two to three months. During this period, we will continue to use various laboratory tests (including infectious disease screening and genetic testing) to evaluate your specimens and will have you meet with staff members so that they can gather more information about your personal and family medical history, health, and wellbeing.
After you have submitted your online sperm donor application and it has been accepted, you will be contacted to schedule an appointment at the branch location nearest you. If you want to find out if you would qualify for our screening program, please fill out our sperm donor application.
At this appointment, you’ll be asked to complete a more comprehensive donor application and to collect your first semen specimen in a private collection room. Compensation is not provided for this specimen as it is only used to see if you will meet the specimen parameters of our program. We will contact you, normally within three days, with the determination of your application.
Once your comprehensive application is approved, you’ll be asked to make your next appointment — the first of (on average) four appointments during this stage of the qualification process.
At this next appointment, you’ll learn even more about the program through an orientation, and your donor information will be created and reviewed, including:
- Your donor number
- Your donor profile (the document that provides information about you, your family, and your medical histories)
- Three photos of you as a child
This phase of the process also includes a general physical examination performed by one of our partnered physicians, a psychological evaluation by one of our affiliated licensed mental healthcare professionals, a criminal and education background check, and a meeting with our reproductive genetics specialist to review and discuss your family medical history. During this part of the process, if your physical exam has been completed you may provide semen donations and will be compensated for all acceptable donations.
All laboratory testing, including the genetic screening and physical examination, are free of charge to you. Identifying information collected is strictly confidential and is never released by us without your written consent. You can learn more about sperm donor confidentiality by referring to our policy on donor anonymity.
Once you complete these activities and with the approval of our trained and qualified medical directors, you will become a member of a very special group...fully qualified sperm donors for California Cryobank!
Congratulations! You may now customize your own donation schedule. We request that you donate two to three times a week.
Your blood will be drawn approximately every two months to provide for required infectious disease testing.
When you retire from the donor program, you’ll be required to return for three final appointments (two, four, and then six months after your last donation) so that we can perform final screenings for infectious disease. Special compensation is provided for this last visit.
