Our History as a Global Leader

Founded in 1977, California Cryobank® is a full–service, comprehensive resource for frozen donor sperm, private semen cryopreservation, and specialized reproductive services (including egg, sperm, and embryo storage). And our donor sperm, directed donor, and fertility preservation services have helped to create 75,000+ families globally.

Every facet of our services is expertly led by members of our experienced and compassionate team — which includes medical directors, physicians, lab technicians, reproductive genetic specialists, and client service consultants. Our sperm donor program is considered to be one of the premier programs of its kind. Registration, Accreditation, and Licenses Help to Define Our High Standards

National Agencies Regulating Sperm Banks

All sperm banks and other establishments offering donor semen services must, by law, be registered with the FDA. FDA regulations primarily focus on donor eligibility and documentation and infectious disease risk (rather than genetic screening and testing). Additionally, the FDA's compliance division will often perform unannounced on-site inspections to make sure all facilities meet their requirements.

California Cryobank is registered with the FDA and maintains compliance with applicable FDA regulatory requirements. We are also registered with Health Canada to import reproductive tissue into Canada. We maintain compliance with Health Canada requirements and guidelines for reproductive tissue.

Voluntary National Accreditation and Inspection for Sperm Banks

The American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) is the premier standard-setting body for tissue banks in the nation. While voluntary, in order to gain AATB accreditation, a tissue bank must submit to (and pass) comprehensive on-site inspection to ensure donors are screened appropriately and polices and procedures are in place to maintain an adequate quality management system and support tissue banking functions.

It’s important to note that many sperm banks may claim to “meet” or “exceed” AATB standards simply because they have undergone an inspection. However, very few gamete banks have gained AATB accreditation after undergoing an inspection by AATB.

California Cryobank has undergone inspection and earned accreditation by AATB". Not all CCB locations have have opened up in the past year have received accreditation.

Professional Society Guidelines for Screening Sperm Donors

California Cryobank also voluntarily follows guidelines and “standards of practice” (regarding screening egg and sperm donors) that are recommended by the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).

State Agencies Regulating Sperm Banks

New York, California, Maryland, Oregon, and Illinois are among the states that have registration requirements for the collection or distribution of sperm within their jurisdiction. New York, which performs routine inspections, has the most stringent state standards.

In addition to being FDA registered and accredited by the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB), California Cryobank is also licensed by the New York State Department of Health and the California Department of Public Health.
