General Sperm Donor Requirements
Before you can be considered for sperm donation you must meet these minimum requirements: be between 19 and 38 years old, have some college experience (professional experience may also be considered), legally allowed to work in the U.S, and be in good health.
The first step is to complete our online application. One to two business days after submitting your application, you’ll receive a notification letting you know if you’ve been accepted. If accepted, you’ll be asked to schedule an in-person appointment to complete a more detailed application and leave a semen specimen for evaluation.
The entire screening process — from the approval of your application to the time you become a fully qualified donor — will take approximately two to three months.
Yes, potential donors must supply proof of education.
Yes, potential donors must live, work, or attend school near one of our many locations in the United States.
J-1 students, F-1, and M-1 nonimmigrant foreign students may only be eligible to work under certain conditions. While it may not be a violation of any employment laws, your participation in the California Cryobank program may violate the terms of your visa. It is your responsibility to check with your visa sponsor to see if you are allowed to earn wages in the U.S. by participating in this program.
No, California Cryobank does not provide sponsorship for visa applicants.

No, tobacco use does not prohibit you from applying to our sperm donor program. However, during the time that you are a participating donor, we ask that you refrain from using tobacco.

The average compensation from ranges from $10-$175 per donation.
You’ll receive a maximum of $175 per donation, which means you can earn up to $525 per week. Also note, some donation locations offer bonus payments.
Every other week.
Donors’ compensation will be paid by check every other week.
Although no taxes are deducted from your California Cryobank checks, this compensation is reported to the IRS. You will receive a 1099 tax form if the compensation you received is more than $600 in one year. To maintain confidentiality, you should classify yourself as an independent contractor.
Time Commitment For Sperm Donors
Fully qualified sperm donors are expected to donate at least once per week. However, we encourage our fully qualified donors to visit the office two to three times per week.
The length of time in the program may vary, but, generally, we expect our sperm donors to be actively participating for 9-12 months.
Donor Rights
No, you will not receive specific information regarding the recipients of your sperm donation. We protect the privacy of both our donors and our clients. The only time we would share any identifying information about you, is if a donor-conceived offspring (age 18 or older) should request it. At which time we would release information in compliance with country regulations.
For clients in the U.S., that would include your full name, date of birth, and last-known address.
For clients outside of the U.S., we typically provide your full name, previous names, date of birth, and last-known address, plus any additional country-specific information.
As a sperm donor, you are exempt from child support or any other responsibilities of a legal parent for the offspring. Further, you will sign a contract with California Cryobank that includes this statement.
No, before donors are allowed to participate in our program, they are required to sign a legal document waiving all parental rights and responsibilities to children conceived from the purchase of their sperm. Learn more about your rights as a donor.
